Family succession or sale? How to assess your company's future

Questions for separating family goals, business needs, and the available ownership and management options.

July 15, 20261 min read

Succession means considering the future of the business and the people connected to it. A sale is one option, not the only one. A useful conversation starts by separating business needs from each family member's preferences.

Three questions to begin with

Who wants the responsibility? Discuss genuine interests without assuming that working in the business means wanting to lead it.

What preparation would that person need? Review experience, responsibilities, and support. Define how readiness would be developed and assessed.

What does the business need? Identify the capabilities, investment, and leadership structure required for its next stage.

The IFC Family Business Governance Handbook distinguishes family, ownership, and management roles and addresses succession planning. It is a general reference for structuring that conversation.

Compare more than two paths

Consider family succession, family ownership with professional management, a full sale, or a sale with a retained stake. Assess what each would mean for decisions, income, responsibilities, and your own role.

A sale does not itself guarantee financial security or continuity. Its terms and the buyer's plan matter too. Retaining family ownership does not require every family member to work in operations.

Design a process, not an immediate answer

Bring together the people who need to participate, agree on criteria, and identify missing information. An independent advisor can help organize differences and review legal and financial consequences.

Exploring alternatives does not oblige you to sell. If the family prefers to continue, the same analysis can support a better-prepared transition.
